FAQS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Can proper caulking help me save on utility bills?
Air leaks can make your utility bills through the roof. It is hard to imagine that a few gaps, cracks, and crevices can send utility bills skyrocketing, but that is exactly what happens. Several small gaps in doors or windows are enough to let sufficient cold air in. During the winter months, heaters will have to work harder to ensure sufficient heating of the room. In old buildings, one can find several holes in the outside walls, roof, and foundation. These could be large obvious holes or small holes that you might not even notice. However, both small and big holes and cracks have an impact on the heat preserved in the room. During the warmer months, the opposite is true. Air conditioning must be left on longer and at cooler temperatures to ensure the room cools down sufficiently. This is because the cool air escapes through these holes and gaps. Majestic Caulking Inc. can help you find all those air leaks and fix them up so you can save 20%-30% on your electricity bill both in the winter and the summer months. • Why is caulking important?
Caulking helps to seal up any gaps completely. All unwanted gaps can be sealed off to prevent seepage of water, the entry of cold drafts of air, and even prevent pests from entering a building. Plus, caulking enhances the aesthetic looks of a building, covering ugly cracks, crevices, and gaps.
  • Why is it important to replaced failed caulking?
Failed caulking must be removed and replaced because, over time, the caulk will not serve its purpose satisfactorily. You will notice leaks and gaps widening over time. This is turn will lead to other problems like increased utility bills, seepage, and damage of the structure of the building due to that seepage.
  • What is caulking? And what do you use for caulk?
Caulking is the process of tightly sealing of unwanted gaps, seal joints, and seams against leakage in different types of structures and piping. Caulks are made from one of these four polymers – latex, rubber, polyurethane, or silicone or a combination of these. Each of these base polymers determines the characteristics of the caulk – its durability, adherence quality, whether it can be smoothed or painted, etc.
  • When should I replace caulking on my doors and windows?
If yours is a newly built home, you will not need caulking for a year. It takes time for a newly established building to settle. If the building is not new, caulking must be checked for regularly, and should be redone once every five years. If you notice cold drafts entering a particular room or higher-than-usual utility bills, it's probably time to look around for damaged caulk. You can get in touch with us, and we will send over our inspector to check if the problem is with the caulking. Caulking is most often visible – you will notice cracks, splits, and even air bubbles. If you notice any of these, contact us, and we will be glad to help.
  • When is the best time in the year to replace caulking?
Caulking is possible even at temperatures as low as below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, before beginning the caulking process, it is necessary to factor in the material that must be caulked and the type of caulk that will be used. Some caulks do not set well in extremely cold weather. If you can wait until the weather gets warm, then we advise you to do so. Our caulking inspector can tell you what your best option is, once he has inspected your building. Majestic Caulking Inc. works throughout the year and take up projects when the temperature is between -20 C and +35C.
  • What type of caulking products do you use?
All the caulking products used at Majestic Caulking Inc. are commercial grade, high-performance materials. The type of caulk we use for each project will depend on the individual project's requirements. Each type of caulk is created for a specific purpose. For instance, some caulks are appropriate for glass and ceramic, while others work better on wood, brick, and concrete, while still others work best on metal surfaces. The type of caulk we use at Majestic Caulking Inc. for a particular project will also depend on factors like the need for moisture resistance or temperature resistance. When we inspect your building, we will recommend the best type of product based on the material of the surface being sealed. All material used by Majestic Caulking Inc. is suited to Canadian climate.
  • I just replaced my windows. Should I replace the caulking as well?
When you replace your old windows with new windows, you will notice that the sealant used by the window manufacturer is shiny and new. However, this is a temporary finish. Over the next few months, you will notice the newness disappears. Plus, the performance of the sealants will go down consistently. The lifespan of the materials used is not as high-grade as the ones we use at Majestic Caulking Inc. Hence, we recommend that you replace the caulking in your windows, although your windows are new.
  • Do windows with metal capping require caulking?
Metal capping on windows is more of a decorative trim than a protective layer. So, your window will not be properly sealed off despite the metal capping. In fact, if you look closely, you will notice several gaps between the wall and the metal capping. Behind the metal, capping is a caulking bead that would normally be seen on uncapped windows. We seal of these caps to ensure even the smallest and most negligible of cracks are completely sealed off.
  • Do you have to remove old caulking before replacing caulking?
There are two ways of approaching old caulking. Some people believe that old caulking can be left alone. New caulking is applied over the old caulking and extended over the beading of the old caulking, onto the wall. However, the problem with this is that the caulking bead will not be strong enough. Also, there will be less of the new material applied. The old caulking can chip away, taking down the new caulking as well. At Majestic Caulking Inc., we ensure we gently remove the old caulking, cleaning up the gaps, and refilling them completely with new material.
  • Can I select the color of caulking I want?
Majestic Caulking Inc. ensures that the caulking matches the surrounding frame. However, if you would like us to use a particular color, we are open to your suggestion. Caulk is available in a variety of colors and shades, and you can choose one of your choices. Caulk is also available in satin, gloss, and semi-gloss. Some caulks can be painted over (this is not possible with silicone caulk), while others allow you to match your paint by simply adding latex paint to it. So, if you would prefer to use plain caulk and paint over it, you can go ahead with that option too. Caulk can also be stained to match the color of the wood.
  • Which is the best caulk for bathtubs?
Silicone caulk is great for bathtubs and sinks as it resists the formation of mold and mildew. It is also water-resistant and sticks on superbly to smooth surfaces in the bathroom.

We understand that you have a busy schedule and cannot be bogged down with our work. When we work outside your home, we do not require you to be home.
